This policy covers personally identifiable information collected or stored by the Web Host (TMWA) using the Fables Service.
This is a critically important policy: By using of any Fables websites, whether by reading, contributing, or designing for the Services, the user is implicitly agreeing to the Terms of this policy. Users that do not agree with the Terms set through this policy should not use any Fables websites hosted by the TMWA.
Summary
Simply put, the TMWA collects and retains the least amount of personally identifiable information needed to fulfill the site's operational needs.
Collected information
In general, this Policy only applies to private information stored, collected, or held by the TMWA which is not publicly available.
Websites under Fables requires the use of a User Account to make contributions. Users that register are identified by their chosen username. Users select a password, which is confidential and used to verify the integrity of their account.
Unless required by law, no person will knowingly disclose passwords and/or cookies generated to identify a user. User accounts have their IP addresses logged, but this information is private strictly to the Web Host, and will not be shared. IP addresses may be used to prevent vandalism, the creation and use of multiple accounts, or to prevent malicious or otherwise detrimental users from accessing the site. This will be done at request of site staff, but the specific IP addresses will not be revealed outside of the TMWA's operating staff team.
Once created, user accounts will not be removed, primarily due to MediaWiki restrictions. In the event of legally necessary removal due to GDPR regulations or for other safety purposes, accounts may be renamed solely to obfuscate the original identy of the User, but this does not garuantee that Users cannot be determined through contribution habits such as speech patterns or timestamps of submitted edits.
Some simple logged data, such as IP address, usage, or location, may be examined by developers in the course of solving technical problems or in tracking down web crawlers that overwhelm the site.
Data retention
When a User requests or reads a page, no more information is collected than is typically collected by websites. The TMWA may keep raw logs of such transactions, but these will not be published or used to track legitimate users.
When a page is edited by a User, the server confidentially stores related IP information for a limited period of time. This information is automatically deleted after a set period.
The sites set a temporary session cookie on a User's device whenever a page is visited. Users who do not intend to log in or edit may deny this cookie; it will be deleted at the end of the browser's session. More cookies may be set when one logs in to maintain logged-in status. If a username or password is saved in one's browser, that information will be saved for up to 30 days, and this information will be re-sent to the server on every visit to the site.
Edits or other contributions to pages are generally retained forever. Removing text from a page does not permanently delete it. Any User can usually look at a previous version of an article and see what content was there and a summary of changes. Even if an article or revision is "deleted", staff members entrusted with higher level of access may still see what was removed from public view. Only in the exceedingly rare circumstance when the TMWA is required to delete editing-history material in response to a court order or equivalent legal process, there is no guarantee any truly permanent deletion will occur.
Email addresses are not a requirement when registering for an account. Users with accounts may be contacted automatically by the TMWA for notifications, password resets, or major changes to this policy. Users may remove their email addresses at any time to prevent it from being used, at the resk that passwords will no longer be able to be recovered if lost.
It is possible to enable other logged-in users to send email to them through the wiki. When receiving an email from other users through this system, the User's email address is not revealed to them. When choosing to send an email to other users, the email is displayed as the sender's username.
Private correspondence between users may be saved at those Users' discretion and is not subject to this Privacy Policy.
When private information may need to be used
The TMWA will only use or release personally identifiable data collected in the server logs, or through records in the database via the CheckUser feature, or through other non-publicly-available methods in any of the following situations:
In response to a valid subpoena or other compulsory request from law enforcement,
With permission of the affected user,
When necessary for investigation of abuse complaints,
Where the information pertains to page views generated by a spider or bot and its dissemination is necessary to illustrate or resolve technical issues,
Where the user has been vandalizing articles or persistently behaving in a disruptive way, data may be released to a service provider, carrier, or other third-party entity to assist in the targeting of IP blocks, or to assist in the formulation of a complaint to relevant Internet Service Providers,
Where it is reasonably necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of any Fables websites, its users or the public.
Other disclaimers
This Privacy Policy only covers the use of cookies on Fables websites and does not cover the use of cookies by any advertisers, affiliates, or third party sites. Tracking links, while discouraged, may be inevitable for use and could track data if clicked.
